Friends and family of Coach John E. Peterson
After learning about Coach John E. Peterson’s retirement, the TJC tennis teams, his former students, colleagues, friends, family and the Tyler tennis community came together to surprise him with the establishment of an endowed scholarship during a dinner in his honor. The Coach John E. Peterson Endowed Scholarship provides a scholarship each year to a full-time student actively participating on a TJC tennis team.
Peterson began his tenure at Tyler in 1987, and his teams have experienced great success throughout the years. The tennis court complex at the JoAnn Medlock Murphy Tennis Center was recently named in honor of Peterson to recognize his great impact on TJC. His men’s tennis teams won 12 national championships, and his women’s tennis teams hold 13 national championships, including winning the title the last two years. In his 24 years at TJC, Peterson’s overall men’s tennis record is 394-101 and his women’s teams are 434-88.
