Tom and Patty Simmons

Tom and Patty Simmons believed deeply in the transformative power of education, hard work, and lifelong learning. Their lives reflected a commitment to helping others grow, both in and out of the classroom.

Tom Simmons earned degrees in geology and biology, as well as a Master of Science degree in Biology from Mississippi State University, before serving his country as a Korean War veteran. After a successful career in the energy industry, he followed his passion for education by teaching at Tyler Junior College.

In the early 1970s, Tom began developing a vision for a campus greenhouse that would provide students with unique learning opportunities. What started as a modest idea ultimately grew into the Bonnera Bess Vaughn Conservatory, a landmark facility at the center of TJC’s campus. His leadership, dedication, and vision helped bring the conservatory to life, creating a lasting educational resource that continues to serve generations of students. When the conservatory opened in 1977, Tom proudly noted, “Certainly no junior college has anything like it. There’s not a better greenhouse anywhere.”

Patty Simmons was a Tyler native, a Tyler Junior College alumna, and a member of the Apache Bells. She graduated from the University of North Texas, was a member of Alpha Delta Pi sorority, and later earned her master’s degree from Southern Methodist University. Patty dedicated more than three decades to teaching Language Arts, inspiring generations of students through her love of reading and her belief in the value of hard work and personal responsibility. Her commitment to education extended beyond the classroom through civic involvement, volunteer service, and leadership in her community.

Together, Tom and Patty built a life centered on learning, service, and family. In addition to their careers in education, they operated a cattle ranch in East Texas, embracing a life rooted in stewardship, perseverance, and community. They shared a love of teaching, the outdoors, and investing in the success of others.

Through the scholarship they established, their legacy continues to support students as they pursue educational opportunities and work toward achieving their goals. Their investment in future generations reflects the same values that guided their lives: curiosity, determination, generosity, and a belief that education can open doors to meaningful possibilities.
